Fair Connections is a new Community Interest Company started in 2015 by Sara Parker. Sara has worked at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) since 1994 teaching both Geography and Sociology. In 1992 Sara lived in a remote village in the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. She has taught English for 6 months in Nepal and fell in love with the country, its people, culture, way of life and has been back over 25 times to work with local people on action research projects.
Following having helped to introduce an innovative literacy programme into the Nepalese village of Sikles; meeting the demand of local women who wanted the opportunity to learn to read and write Sara's experiences formed the basis of her PhD. This later resulted in a Higher Education link between Tribhuvan University and LJMU.
Following on from her PhD, Sara facilitated a community photography project which led to a coffee table book featuring photography all taken by Nepalese locals. The book 'Our Village Our Life' offers a unique insight into life in rural Nepal and shows the similarities and differences betweenNepal and the UK. The sale of the book led to local groups in Sikles raising over £6000 for community development projects.
Fair Connections is an extension of this work and aims to deepen young peoples understanding of both fair trade and other cultures. Initally between the UK and Nepal but after reading the book we are eager to see where the journey takes us.
Sara has taken many people to Nepal on her research visits from family and friends to students at Liverpool John Moores University.
Fair Connections hopes to take many more new friends to Nepal, especially teachers and people interested in education and fair trade, to help develop Fair Trade Tourism in Nepal.
Sara las visited Nepal in late November of 2015 with some teachers who visited their link schools. If you are interested in visitng Nepal to learn first hand about fair trade drop Sara an email with Fair Trade Tourism in the title at
